DZG-wide seminar series: Computational Topics in Biomedicine

Topic: Beyond Phenotyping: Digital Twins and In Silico Models of COPD

With: Raúl San José Estépar, Harvard Medical School (USA)

Raúl San José Estépar is Co-Director of the Applied Chest Imaging Laboratory at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Associate Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School. His research focuses on computational imaging, artificial intelligence and digital twins to better understand chronic lung diseases and predict disease progression and treatment response.

His lab develops machine learning approaches to extract biological information from imaging and multimodal data, with a particular focus on COPD. He is the original developer and chief architect of the open-source Chest Imaging Platform and has co-authored more than 350 peer-reviewed publications.

This series is designed to bring together data science and AI initiatives across the German Centers for Health Research (DZG) and to interact with international speakers who have generated impressive contributions to the translational application of AI and data science.

Topic: Academic Research, Writing, and Reaching People

With: Prof. Alexander Bartelt, Technical University of Munich (TUM)

Alexander Bartelt is Else Kröner Fresenius Professor and Chair of Translational Nutritional Medicine at TUM and Principal Investigator at the Helmholtz Diabetes Center Munich. His research focuses on the molecular biology of metabolism and its role in obesity, fatty liver, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

The Bartelt Lab investigates how nutrition, energy metabolism and thermogenesis regulate weight gain and loss at the cellular level, with a particular focus on metabolic adaptation and the interaction between fat cells and the immune system. Bartelt is also a member of the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD) and the German Centre for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK).

The DZG Training Programme ‘Beyond the Bench - Turning discoveries into treatments’ is aimed at early career scientists from all DZGs with a strong interest in translational research. Online events are open to all interested DZG early career scientists. Registration is possible in good time before the respective events.

1st DZG Berlin Day

For the very first time, all German Centers for Health Research (DZG) at the Berlin site will come together for a joint day.

We expect around 300 participants from the five Berlin DZGs (DKTK, DZHK, DZNE, DZPG, DZKJ) as well as the associated centers (DZL, DZIF, DZD).
