4. DZG Munich Day 2026: Health Research in Munich Working Together for the Medicine of Tomorrow
Scientific highlights, transdisciplinary research, and new collaborations will be the focus of DZG Munich Day on July 29, 2026. For the fourth time, the eight German Centers for Health Research (DZG) in Munich are inviting scientists at all career stages to learn about the latest research findings, exchange ideas across centers, and explore joint research strategies and innovative technologies.
Bearing the slogan “Munich meets Munich”, DZG Munich Day is aimed specifically at researchers from Munich who are affiliated with one of the eight German Centers for Health Research. In addition, scientists from DZG sites throughout Germany are participating.
Scientific exchange in health research
The event has become established as a key platform for scientific exchange in health research. Last year, more than 200 guests from the fields of research, healthcare, politics, and scientific organizations took advantage of the opportunity to network and launch new research projects.
The event will be opened by Prof. Martin Hrabě de Angelis, Scientific Director and Spokesperson for Helmholtz Munich and member of the DZG Executive Board. Moreover, the Federal Minister of Research, Technology, and Space, Dorothee Bär, will deliver a welcome address via video message. Thereafter, Prof. Stefanie Dimmeler, spokesperson for the DZG Executive Board, will provide an update on current developments and joint activities of the German Centers for Health Research.
Using AI to develop new indications for proven drugs
A particular highlight is the panel discussion on the topic “AI Meets Drug Repurposing.” A panel of high-profile experts—including Kamyar Hadian (Drug Discovery), Ralf Huss (Managing Director, BioM), Giulia Magno (physician-scientist), Julia Schnabel (AI for Biomedical Imaging), Stephan Sieber (chemist), and Fabian Theis (AI expert) will discuss how artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to identify new indications for existing or approved drugs. Michael von Bergwelt (spokesperson for DKTK Munich) will moderate the discussion.
Joint research and exploitation of synergies
Even though the various widespread diseases differ in their manifestations, they often share common biological causes and mechanisms. The DZG's strong network of institutions opens up unique opportunities to develop innovative research approaches and translate them more quickly into medical application.
Therefore, DZG Munich Day gives particular focus on the cooperation between the centers. Among other things, the presentation will feature current transdisciplinary projects on the following topics:
- Biobanks as Interfaces and Drivers of Research
- The National Cohort (NAKO) – Design, Implementation, and Key Findings
- Interrelations between Psychological Problems in Childhood and Asthma in Adolescence

Opportunity to initiate new partnerships
The event also offers a wide range of opportunities for networking and establishing new partnerships. Researchers at all career stages—from early-career scientists to principal investigators (PIs)—are given the opportunity to discuss shared perspectives and challenges in translational health research.
